Centurion Lounges — Amex
Centurion Lounges are the benchmark for credit card airport lounges in the United States. American Express builds and operates them directly, and access is limited to Amex Platinum and Centurion cardholders. You cannot buy a membership or walk in.
What you get: Chef-curated menus that change seasonally and reflect local cuisine. Full cocktail bars with craft drinks. Spa and shower suites at select locations. Dedicated work areas with power outlets and fast WiFi. Family rooms at several locations. The food and drink alone can easily justify a visit.
Who gets in: Amex Platinum cardholders, Centurion cardholders, and Delta SkyMiles Reserve cardholders (when flying Delta, at select locations). You must show your eligible card and a same-day boarding pass.
Guest policy: 2 guests free per Amex Platinum cardholder. Additional guests $50 each. Children under 2 are free and do not count toward the guest limit.
Locations: Currently 14+ U.S. locations including JFK, SFO, LAX, DFW, MIA, SEA, PHX, IAH, CLT, DEN, PHL, and LAS. International locations include Hong Kong, London Heathrow, Melbourne, and Mexico City. Amex continues to open new locations.
Access hours: Typically 3 hours before departure. Some locations enforce this strictly at peak times. Arrive early if your departure is during a busy period.
Capital One Lounges
Capital One entered the airport lounge space with purpose-built premium lounges that compete directly with Centurion Lounges on quality.
What you get: Locally-sourced food menus, craft beverages including cocktails, beer, and wine. Relaxation rooms for napping. Shower suites. Multi-faith prayer and meditation rooms. Family rooms with toys and activities. The design emphasizes natural materials and open layouts.
Who gets in: Capital One Venture X cardholders and authorized users. Capital One Venture and Spark Miles cardholders can purchase access for $65 per visit.
Guest policy: 2 guests free per Venture X cardholder. Authorized users on the account also receive complimentary access independently.
Locations: Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Dulles (IAD), and Denver (DEN). Capital One has announced plans for additional locations. With only 3 current locations, this network is valuable if you fly through these airports regularly but limited otherwise. The Venture X's included Priority Pass membership covers the gaps.
Chase Sapphire Lounges
Chase entered the lounge market with its own branded lounges, starting with Boston Logan Airport in 2025.
What you get: Premium food and beverage service, dedicated work spaces, and a design focused on elevated comfort. Details on amenities continue to evolve as Chase opens additional locations.
Who gets in: Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders only. The Chase Sapphire Preferred does not provide Chase Sapphire Lounge access.
Guest policy: Details vary by location. Check Chase's current terms before arriving.
Locations: Boston Logan Airport (BOS) is the first location. Additional Chase Sapphire Lounge locations have been announced but specific airports and timelines continue to be confirmed. The Chase Sapphire Reserve's Priority Pass membership provides broader coverage while the Chase lounge network expands.
Priority Pass Select
Priority Pass is the largest independent lounge network in the world with over 1,500 locations across 140+ countries. Several premium credit cards include complimentary Priority Pass Select membership, which would cost $469/year if purchased directly.
What you get: Varies significantly by location. Top-tier Priority Pass lounges offer hot food buffets, full bars, showers, and comfortable seating. Smaller locations may offer little more than packaged snacks and basic drinks in a cramped room. Check the Priority Pass app for reviews and photos before visiting an unfamiliar location.
At many airports, Priority Pass also provides restaurant credits instead of or in addition to lounge access. You can use your Priority Pass at participating airport restaurants for a set credit (typically $28-36 per person) toward food and drinks.

Who gets in: Delta SkyMiles Reserve cardholders (when flying Delta), Amex Platinum cardholders (when flying Delta, added in partnership with Delta), Delta One passengers, and Delta Diamond Medallion members.
Guest policy for credit card holders: Delta SkyMiles Reserve cardholders can bring 2 guests. Amex Platinum cardholders accessing via their card can bring 2 guests as well. Policies may change; check Delta's current terms before assuming guest access.

Which Card Gives You the Best Lounge Access
The answer depends on where you fly and whether you travel solo or with guests.
If you fly domestically from major airports: The Amex Platinum provides the broadest coverage with Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass, Delta Sky Clubs (on Delta flights), and several smaller lounge networks. It is the only card that accesses Centurion Lounges, which are consistently the highest-quality domestic option.
If you fly through DFW, IAD, or DEN: The Capital One Venture X gives you Capital One Lounge access at these airports plus Priority Pass everywhere else. At $395/year versus $695 for the Amex Platinum, the Venture X costs $300 less while offering comparable lounge coverage at its hub airports.
If you want the lowest cost for lounge access: The Capital One Venture X at $395/year includes Priority Pass Select (2 guests free), Capital One Lounge access, a $300 annual travel credit, and 10,000 anniversary bonus miles. After the travel credit and bonus miles, the effective annual cost for lounge access is under $0.
If you travel internationally: Priority Pass, included with all three premium cards above, provides the widest international coverage. The Amex Platinum adds Centurion Lounge access at select international locations (London, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Mexico City) and Plaza Premium Lounges worldwide.

Tips for Using Credit Card Lounge Access
Download the apps. The Priority Pass app shows lounge locations, hours, and user reviews at every airport. The Amex app shows Centurion Lounge hours and real-time capacity. Check both before heading to the airport.
Arrive early. Centurion Lounges at busy airports (JFK, SFO, LAX) frequently hit capacity during peak hours. If you arrive and the lounge is full, you will be placed on a waitlist. Arriving 2.5-3 hours before your flight gives you the best chance of getting in and actually enjoying the space.
Know your guest limits. Showing up with 3 guests on a card that allows 2 free creates an awkward situation at the door. Confirm your card's guest policy before inviting travel companions to join you.
